I have been truly fortunate to work with some of the world's great
musicians, having played and recorded with such luminaries as
Tony Levin
and
Victor Bailey,
Jerry Marotta and
Lenny White,
Chieli Minucci, string
maestros
Antoine Silverman and
Dave Eggar, Rolling Stones saxophonist
Tim
Ries, sterling vocalist
Darryl Tookes, the hyper talented
Jay Stollman and
Fred Shehadi, multi-instrumentalist
Andy Stein from Prairie Home Companion,
and accordionist
Charlie Giordano, currently working with Bruce and The E Street Band among many, many others. My interests in powerful and natural
music led me to spend nearly a year writing and producing GRANCIA, a
collection of some of my "non-commercial' instrumentals arranged for a
quasi chamber orchestra built around a dream rhythm section of Tony, Jerry
and Chieli which was released this year. It hasn't knocked Britney off the
charts, but the critics seem to like it a lot. I also have a deep love for
soul music and great R&B singing and have included some songs I wrote and
recorded with Darryl that highlight his staggering vocal abilities. Lately
I've been creating some interesting music with New York guitarist and
producer David Lawrence, and I'm always doing new solo piano work. Some of
that is up here as well. Enjoy the music.
Here are excerpts from each of the 12 tracks on Grancia.

When it comes to song writing, I'm a traditionalist; melody matters having a real chorus, and a genuine emotional arc that runs through the body of the tune. No matter what is topping the charts at any given time, people will always love a real song... the most jaded human beings can slip into a indescribable reverie without even knowing it when under the spell of a good tune. Not to get all Jungian on you, but I think there's something in the collective unconscious that responds to 32 bars of well balanced music. There must have been some primitive Marvin Gayes and Tony Bennetts wailing away trying to get the cave women. Fast forward 30,000 years, add some nicely tailored clothing, and things aren't so different. I'm a believer in the old adage about a good song being able to stand on it's own regardless of production, so on this page, you'll find some pop tunes in varying degree of production quality, from rough Demo to full blown master quality.

I love to do exploratory improvisations on the piano and create unusual soundscapes with other musicians. I love complex harmony that stops shy of atonality (think Donald Fagen,Todd Rundgren, Debussy, Copland, Keith Emerson) though I tend to avoid dominant seventh's, finding them slutty and cheap. Here are some pieces of music that are rather idiosyncratic and personal in nature
